The Cure of Ars

Jean Marie Vianney was born in Dardilly, near Lyon in France in 1786.  He was ordanined a priest in 1815.  After three years as a curate he became parish priest in Ars, he was to stay there for the rest of his life.

During his time there he became internationally renowned for his pastoral and priestly work.  He would spend many hours in confession, up to eighteen hours a day in the last ten years of his life.  People would travel great distances to consult him and because of his great works converting souls he was subjected to great torment from the devil, he even had his bed set on fire.

In 1929 he was named the Patron Saint of Parish Priests, his feast day is on the 8th August.
